Sometimes encrytion is very indirect. Morse code is the easiest to implement. All you have to do is somehow encode dot and dash through two characters. Similarly semaphores could be shown as a person exercising and to the keen-eyed, the shapes formed by the person doing the exercise could encode letters! They could also be shown through the hands of an analog clock.
